Looking for a hygienic restroom has never been that comfortable in Singapore which may have been a hassle for many tourists who wanted to be pampered with their uneasiness while roaming around the hotspots, but not until when the LOO or “Let’s Observe Ourselves” Connect app came out to provide instant results of what they are looking for. It is said to be useful given that by simply installing it on android phone, the users can already locate the clean toilets as certified by the Restroom Association in the said country and give feedbacks regarding certain locations by simply indicating the type of toilet operator. But before trying it out, these are the essential information worth knowing first about the LOO Connect app:
How does the LOO Connect App Operate?
The application was developed by 23-year-old Hoo Chang Sheng, a Nanyang Polytechnic School of Information Technology student, while doing internship at the Rest Room Association of Singapore and in collaboration with the country’s Land Authority. Specifically, Mr. Hoo had analyzed and fitted various location-based information and the requirements of RAS to mobile App platform and he believes that the invention is a good social cause.
Meanwhile, the app allows people to find clean toilets and make comments on or rate with number of stars the existing public accommodations. The tracking of the toilets is made possible by the OneMap or the www.onemap.sg that provides crowdsourcing template. And it is noteworthy that the app can be used on smart phones and android tablet and is noted to be utilized for encouraging socially responsible behavior. And yet, through the application, over 40,000 restrooms in Singapore may be divided into three categories:
- Disgusting Toilets – dirty or unhygienic toilets
- Certified Restrooms – under the Happy Toilet Programme
- STAR@Schools – under the STAR Awards Programme
However, it should be noted that before adding new location, it is required to indicate the type of toilet operator being used such as coffee shop, food court, bus interchange, MRT station, etc.
Why Search for Clean Toilets in Singapore?
A survey conducted by RAS in the previous year revealed that the polluted toilets in Singapore are usually in the bus terminals, cafes, markets, and hawker centers, while the cleaner ones are in hospitals, restaurants, and government offices. And the causes of the unhygienic toilets as noted are the poor maintenance, violation of certain policies, and irresponsible users. Notably, with the LOO Connect app which is used to facilitate the collection of information by the volunteers of RAS, it is hoped that the feedback will serve as basis in maintaining high standard hygiene in public toilets.
Benefits of LOO Connect App to the Public
It was noted that the use of app provided authorities information regarding the few toilets tagged as disgusting and the comments of the users served as basis to know the status of the public restrooms. And given this, it is apparent that the app is useful for the government agencies to determine the public toilets that need to be improved and maintain the cleanliness of others which are noted to be good; hence, that could also be beneficial to the public users for a more comfortable restroom experience in Singapore. Nevertheless, it was also noted that there is a need to beef up the database of the app’s curators for it to become more useful more particularly in serving the mission of RAS to advocate clean public toilets.
Anyhow, whatever your purpose of downloading the app from the Android Google Play Store or waiting for its iOS version in July, the most important thing still is you know what a clean and comfortable public restroom means not just in Singapore, but also in other countries around the world.
